Appalcart Booklets
Fall 2025
Print design
Appalcart is the free public bus system providing service to Boone, NC, primarily serving the Appalachian State University student population during the academic year. As a follow-up to my first senior capstone project, Appaltracker, I decided to also take a stab at redesigning Appalcart’s physical brochures and route maps.
The maps for all 19 routes are consolidated into one large brochure, which can be good for newcomers to Boone trying to familiarize themselves with which buses go where, but can be unwieldy and impractical for students that may only ride the one or two routes that travel between main campus and their dorm or apartment complex. Many riders forgo the brochure entirely, using their phones to keep up with the maps and timetables instead. I decided to split up the brochure into multiple smaller booklets that cater to specific areas of Boone, eliminating the need for riders to flip through so many maps just to find a few specific routes.
Each individual booklet contains maps and timetables for each route, reworked to only take up a few spreads and streamline the reading experience. The typesetting of each map has been cleaned up for consistency in alignment and spacing. The original brochure was made up of tabloid-size sheets folded into fourths, while these redesigned booklets are letter-size sheets folded in half, which is more compact and economical.
