Crittertrails

Fall 2025

Visual identity, UI / UX, illustration, print

Crittertrails is a concept for a creature collector mobile game that uses a phone’s pedometer to hatch and raise critters. Taking inspiration from the Pokewalker (a pedometer that came bundled with Pokemon Heartgold & Soulsilver) and Tamagotchi, players’ steps are converted into currency and experience points that can be used to unlock new virtual trails, each of which having a unique population of critters that can be caught and collected. Players can also trade their critters with friends, as well as “ascend” critters to earn special badges and reset their experience gauge, allowing for an extended gameplay loop that motivates players to get up and get moving.

Crittertrails utilizes a high contrast color palette, allowing for various versatile color combinations that are readable and accessible to everyone. Each critter uses thick, rounded outlines and flat colors in their key art, allowing for a wide array of bold and unique designs that still feel cohesive. A rounded typeface, often left lowercase, feels casual and friendly.
